Overview

The Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations 2015 are an essential tool for everyone involved in construction. They exist to improve the health and safety of your site by assisting you to manage risks and allocate resources safely.

This new 6-part online series will provide you with the core skills necessary for implementing CDM and ensuring compliance with these regulations. We’ll begin with an introduction to the legal requirements and responsibilities of contractors under the CDM regulations generally. We’ll then consider Health and Safety Frameworks under the CDM regulations, the responsibilities of the Duty Holders, and who they are. The will series conclude by looking at practical techniques and site requirements for contractors complying with the CDM regulations.

By the end of six sessions, you will be able to demonstrate an enhanced awareness and understanding of the CDM regulations and how to integrate them effectively into Health and Safety Policies on site.

Members gain 3 CIOB CPD points when you reflect on the ethical aspects of your learning from this activity.

Structure

Each module is structured as follows:

  • 30 minutes presentation of the topic
  • 10 minutes review of a case study
  • 20 minutes question and answer session

The course will be delivered over 6 consecutive weeks.

Pre-reading will be provided in advance of each topic. Then, each session is broken down as follows:

  • 30 minutes of online presentations
  • 20 minutes of case studies
  • 10 minutes of Q&A

The sessions are designed to be interactive, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions as Martin delivers each topic. If you are unable to attend a live session, you can submit questions in advance to be addressed during the hour.

Suitability

This course is suitable for those new to construction, as well as those in management and assistant management roles, trade supervisors etc. It is also suitable for more senior staff wanting to refresh their knowledge.

Assessment

This course is for professional development purposes. There is no formal assessment. You will receive 6 hours of CPD and a Certificate of Completion.

Experienced and qualified mechanical engineer and construction manager etc with a master’s in general engineering.

Previously Technical Director and Partner, incl. Head of H&S /Compliance for various organisations for Lend Lease, Vinci, Land & Marine, Rider Levitt Bucknall and Arcadis incl. DWP, as National EHS Manager for Jobcentre Plus Programme. Served as a Regular Military Engineer & Head of SHEF & Tutor for the Royal Engineers Reserves.

Developed and delivered bespoke and accredited Designer, Principal Designer and Contractor training, including CITBs SMSTS and Achieving Behavioural Change courses.

Has been proactive with the HSE on best practice initiatives within the construction industry via CONIAC/CONIAN working groups and active on the HSE’s BIM4 Working Group, incl. 4D Planning workshops, incl. various professional working bodies/groups on the CDM, TWf and new the building safety legislation, integrated gateways and worker engagement research reports. Key speaker on Design for Safety & Digital incl. master class for IOSH & Ministry of Manpower (MoM) at the Design for Safety (DfS) conference in Singapore and a Webinar on DfS for CIC HK. Delivering Design Risk Management (DRM) Workshops for APS & IIRSM. Currently chair of CIOB’s Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisory Group.

Author for various CIOB CM, APS, ROSPA, IOSH articles on BIM, CDM and occupational health dust reduction at source, incl. APS Practice Note on Surveys, co-author for a OH&S case study published by IOSH for the policy & practice journal and APS Practice Note on Design Risk Management.
