This course provides a holistic overview of fire safety and the underpinning knowledge that will enable you to manage fire safety in a modern building covered by the Fire Safety Order.

Overview

Following the Grenfell inquiry, Dame Judith Hackitt produced a recommendations report that outlined the improvements that the sector should make to prevent this type of incident from reoccurring in the future.

The report identified the need for a more joined up approach to working should be implemented (The Golden Thread of Information).This course is designed to improve fire safety awareness for construction industry managers and those responsible for managing fire safety in the workplace. The course covers current and upcoming legislation, building design, fire risk assessments, fire science, and human behaviour in regards to fire safety.

You will learn how to effectively manage and implement fire safety systems, enhancing the safety of building occupants and complying with fire safety laws to reduce the occurrence of fires.

Members gain 10 CIOB CPD points when you reflect on the ethical aspects of your learning from this activity.

The course is in 2 units, and will cover the following:

Unit 1 – Fire Safety Legislation for Construction

  • Legislation, Regulation & Enforcement and the role of the building safety manager
  • Role and responsibilities of the Local Authority Fire Service
  • Building Design and Building Construction

Unit 2 – Fire Safety Management for Construction

  • Principles of fire behaviour to high risk buildings
  • Impact of human behaviour on the outcomes of a fire in high risk buildings
  • Aims of the fire risk assessment process

Specific entry requirements are as follows:

UCAS tariff Score 120 (current) / 32-48 (2017 onwards) and relevant experience
or
Level 4/6 S/NVQ, or equivalent, in a related subject
or
Five years’ relevant construction experience

Assessment

You will be assessed through a written assignment that is based upon a project scenario set by CIOB.
