This course is aimed at construction professionals who require an improved understanding of their fire safety obligations under the Construction, Design and Management Regulations within the current Fire Safety Legislation.

The course has taken into consideration, HSG 168 Fire Safety During Construction (Rev 2022) and the Joint Code of Practice on the Protection from Fire of Construction Sites and Buildings Undergoing Renovation.

The course has been divided into four main subject areas.

  1. Legislation and Competency
  2. Fire Safety considerations during construction under CDM
  3. Building design considerations
  4. Fire Science

Objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Meet the requirements of fire safety under the CDM regulations
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of building design considerations related to types of materials, building elements and building types
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fire science, including the combustion process, common causes of fire, and active and passive fire prevention measures.

Legislation and competency

(The Fire Safety Order 2005, The Fire Safety Act 2021, The Fire Safety England Regulations 2023, The Building Safety Act 2022, DSEAR, RIDDOR, The Building Regulations process, The duties of Principal Designer, Principal Contractor & The client, The Planning Gateways, The Golden Thread principles, Design Phase, Construction Phase, Handover and the certification and commissioning process)

Fire Safety considerations during construction under CDM

(Regulation 29 CDM, Regulation 30 CDM, Liaison with Fire & Rescue Services and their familiarisation visits, Enforcement of legislation at construction sites, The inner cordon and outer cordon responsibilities, The Fire Risk Assessment process, The Fire Safety Plan, Plant and equipment, Smoking, Hot works , Permit to work, Electrical Installations, Arson and Site security, Reducing potential fuel sources, Storage of flammable liquids & Gases, Precautions for temporary heating in Temporary Accommodation Units, TAU’s location of and provision of sleeping for construction workers, Acetylene storage, Underground gas services, Reducing combustibles in and around the site, Flammability of covering materials, Storage of combustible materials, Waste material management, General fire precautions, Managing means of escape, Fire Doors and Assembly Points, Emergency Exit signage and Emergency Lighting Provisions, Compartmentation during construction, Fire Alarm System provision, Firefighting Equipment provision, High Fire Risk Build Methods, Timber Framed buildings and engineered wood products, Composite building panels, High Rise Buildings (new or refurbished), Basic fire precautions for all sites and additional precautions for high-risk sites

Fire Science

(The combustion process, Gas, liquids and solids, The fire triangle and how to break it, The 4 stages of the combustion process, How fires spread through buildings, Common causes of fire, How materials spread fire, The importance of compartmentation, How passive and active measures protect a building, Human behaviour in fire)

Suitability

This course is aimed at those who are actually working in the construction industry and require an improved understanding of their obligations under the Construction, Design and Management Regulations and current Fire Safety Legislation

Assessment

Students will complete the following:

  • Series of Multiple Choice Quizzes (MCQ’s)

Successful completion of all MCQ’s will provide you with a Certificate in Fire Safety During Construction.

Course Leader

Brad Walker

FCIOB

Brad is a fire safety consultant and has supported clients in the housing & commercial sectors for the past 5 years. Prior to that Brad served in the Lancashire Fire & Rescue Services for 30 years in various role(s).

He is an experienced and competent Fire Risk Assessor and Fire Incident Investigator, and one of Brads specialisms is supporting organisations in positioning their Fire Risk Management Plans and Strategies and has successfully carried this out for several housing organisations.

Brad also designs and delivers fire safety training to clients, residents, housing teams and in-house maintenance teams. He is a Fellow of CIOB and CABE, Member of the Engineering Council and Institute of Fire Engineers and has various qualifications in Fire Safety.

He took Trafford Housing Trust through the BS9997 Fire Risk Management process, and in January 2020 they were awarded the standard and became the first business in the country to receive the accreditation,.

Brad has been designing and delivering fire safety courses for the CIOB for the past few years and has taken over 200 students through this course.
