Summary

There is ongoing need to reduce the construction industry’s high environmental impact. Criticism is increasing towards sustainable construction, with efforts labelled as inadequate.

There is pressure to build more homes and infrastructure to meet societal needs. But, with the increased demand to build, environmental sustainability is often perceived as a barrier.

  • What can we do?
  • We need to reduce environmental damage and deliver economic benefit and social advantage.
  • We need to show leadership for sustainability. We must address biodiversity loss, climate change, and social inequality.
  • We need to go beyond current concepts of sustainability and apply regenerative principles.
  • We need to ensure projects have a net positive benefit.

Is it even possible for an industry that uses vast amounts of materials and land to be regenerative? What does this look like in practice?

The CIOB’s Sustainability Conference explores these questions and more.

Members gain 1 CIOB CPD point when you reflect on the ethical aspects of your learning from this activity.
